We’re in the home stretch of our discussions of the Spring 2015 LEGO Avengers Age of Ultron sets, and today we’re looking at a set that gives us that not only gives us our first Marvel Cinematic Universe villainous hideout, but also a pair of highly desirable exclusive minifigures! If you want the LEGO Quicksilver and Baron Von Strucker minifigures, then in the spring you’ll be picking up the Avengers Age of Ultron LEGO Hydra Fortress 76041 set!

LEGO 76041 Burglary at the Hydra Fortress Set with Quicksilver Figure

Hydra has become a real thorn in the side of the heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and with so much time spent on their antagonism both in recent/future Marvel movies and the Agents of SHIELD TV series, I’m glad to see them getting their due with their own LEGO Hydra Fortress playset.

That said, this “fortress” is pretty sad. Basically, it’s a gate to keep heroes out and a tower for the Hydra higher-ups to hide away in. The Hydra assault vehicle that comes with this set is almost as big as the Hydra Fortress itself! Pretty weak, Hydra!

LEGO Quicksilver Figure vs. Hulk and Hydra HenchmanThe big selling-point of this LEGO 76041 Hydra Fortress Break-In set isn’t the playset itself, of course–for most people, the real incentive to grab this set will be the two exclusive minifigures: the LEGO Baron Von Strucker minifigure (with Loki’s staff!) and the LEGO Quicksilver minifigure.

The sometimes-son of Magneto, Quicksilver, gained a huge boost of popularity after his scene-stealing presence in the X-Men: Days of Future Past movie this summer. Even so, exactly zero action figures based off of X-Men DOFP Quicksilver were released, so the public is literally starving for Quicksilver merch. As such, I expect this LEGO Quicksilver figure to make this LEGO 76041 set a solid seller in stores, despite the shortcomings of the Hydra “Fortress” itself.

76041 LEGO Hydra Fortress Minifigures Quicksilver Baron Von Strucker HulkIn addition to the two unique, exclusive minifigures, 76041 LEGO Avengers Hydra Fortress Break-In will also include a LEGO Hulk figure, as well as Captain America and Hydra Henchman minifigures. This is a strong lineup of figures that I anticipate being very well-received by LEGO fans.

What may not be as well-received, however, is the price-point for the Hydra Fortress LEGO set. LEGO has set the MSRP for LEGO 76041 at €59.99–the equivalent of about $73 USD. Now, we don’t know the official piece-count yet for this set (which very likely may be an exclusive, based off of its out-of-order set number), but this doesn’t really look like a $70+ set to me.

Even at $60 I feel like this set may be pushing it, as the Hydra Fortress itself is pretty laughable. This is definitely a set where collectors’ desire for the minifigures will make or break its sales at retail.

LEGO 76041 Burglary at the Hydra Fortress Set with Quicksilver FigureThe LEGO Avengers 2 Burglary at the Hydra Fortress 76041 set is expected to be released in April 2015, with a mass early release being fairly unlikely due to street dates on Avengers: Age of Ultron movie merchandise. I’ll post an update here and to the Bricks and Bloks Facebook Page once LEGO confirms the official US release date, piece count and pricing of this set.

What do you think of the sole movie-based villainous lair set in the LEGO Marvel line, collectors? Will you be adding the Hydra Base to your LEGO collections next year, or are a couple of unique minifigures not enough to sell you this high-priced LEGO Age of Ultron set?

  1. It doesn’t help that these Hulk bigfigs tend to add like a $10 premium to set prices. I get why they make him that way, but wish there was some sort of happy medium between the huge/expensive Hulk bigfig and the tiny/less expensive to make Hulk minifigure we saw in the past.

All that said, given how much the superhero lines overrepresent vehicles—including some real dogs like the Spider-Trike—I’m always happy to see a building, however lame.
