LEGO Star Wars Summer 2013 Sets Preview: Homing Spider Droid 75016

Sometimes LEGO will reveal an upcoming set and I’ll have to cringe and restrain myself from blurting out: “That set is gonna really bomb.” The Homing Spider Droid 75016 is one of those sets. Mainly comprised of two large previously-released droids that were unpopular the first time around, and combined with a boring selection of minifigures, this LEGO Star Wars Summer 2013 set seems destined to end up on clearance racks a year from now…

LEGO Star Wars Homing Spider Droid and Minifigures 2013 Summer SetThe LEGO Star Wars Homing Spider Droid 75016 set consists of a large Homing Spider Droid, a Dwarf Spider Droid, and four minifigures. Both the spider droids have been available before, but with very subtly different builds/coloration differences. The LEGO Spider Droid Dwarf looks noticeably better in its new grey color scheme than it did in the ugly brown/maroon color it was previously released in.

LEGO Spider Droid Drawf and Super Battle Droid Minifigures 75016 LEGO Star Wars 2013The large Spider Droid was in the 2008 LEGO Star Wars Separatist Spider Droid 7681 set, while the LEGO Dwarf Spider Droid was in the 7670 Hailfire Droid & Spider Droid set. Neither of these sets did especially well at retail, and both were heavily discounted before finally selling out. Presumably this set was created with the intention of it being promoted by the release of Star Wars Episode II Attack of the Clones 3D in theaters, but with that movie being cancelled, this set has sort of been left out to die without any kind of prominent media exposure.

75016 LEGO Star Wars Homing Spider Droid BoxThe one “new” minifigure contained in this set is the Jedi Stass Allie. Stass Allie is best-known for being a doppelganger of the more popular Jedi, Adi Gallia, whose actress did not return after Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Considering that the original LEGO Separatist Spider Droid 7681 included the popular clone Captain Fox minifigure and still sat on shelves for ages (even as a Toys R Us exclusive!), I don’t foresee the Stass Allie minifigure being a big enough incentive to sell this set.

2013 Star Wars LEGO Stass Allie and Clone Trooper Minifigures from Homing Spider Droid 75016Along with Stass Allie, you get the exciting minifigure assortment of two Super Battle Droid minifigures and a generic white Clone Trooper minifigure. I guess this is alright for army-builders, but I’m sick of the low-quality Super Battle Droid minifigures and I have enough plain white Clone Troopers already. Your mileage may, of course, vary.

LEGO Homing Spider Droid and Super Battle Droid Minifiugres 75016 August 2013Priced at $29.99, this 295 piece set is a fair deal (10 cents per brick) if nothing else. The 75016 LEGO Star Wars Homing Spider Droid set should begin to arrive in stores in July or August of 2013. I’ll post links to order the set once they’re posted online.
