2014 LEGO TMNT Shredder’s Lair Rescue Revealed & Photos!

Images of the four known non movie LEGO TMNT 2014 sets leaked a few months ago, and we thought that was it for Nickelodeon LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sets this year. But wait–there’s more! While the leaked photos showed off all the mass-release 2014 LEGO TMNT sets, it left out a retailer exclusive set–and it’s a pretty cool one! Coming this spring (and already released in some lucky areas)–LEGO TMNT Shredder’s Lair Rescue 79122!

79122 LEGO Shredder's Lair Rescue Set Exclusive Summer 2014

At first glance I was a bit underwhelmed and disappointed by this LEGO Shredder’s Lair Rescue set, as it doesn’t really feel like much of a lair. But then I thought about what the Shredder’s base actually looks like in the current Nickelodeon TMNT cartoon and realized that yeah, LEGO nailed all the important parts of Shredder’s base.

The only thing that’s truly memorable about the Shredder’s Lair is Shredder’s throne, the Foot Clan banners flanking it, and the steps leading up to it. All of those elements are present here in this LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Lair Rescue 79122 set, so I guess I can’t complain. Other than throw in some generic walls, there’s really not a whole lot more LEGO could have added to this set to make it feel more complete.

The LEGO Flying Turtle Machine vehicle feels kind of goofy, but it’s also the kind of thing that I could actually see Donatello whipping up and the Ninja Turtles using in the Nick TMNT cartoon.

LEGO Shredder Minifigure from LEGO TMNT Shredder's Lair Rescue 79122LEGO 79122 Shredder’s Lair Rescue includes five minifigures: a LEGO Shredder minifigure, a LEGO Raphael minifigure, a LEGO Michelangelo minifigure, a LEGO Foot Soldier minifigure and a new LEGO Robo Foot Ninja minifigure.

The Shredder minifigure is an exclusive (of a sort), as the only previously-released Shredder LEGO minifigure had on a maroon costume with his armor, whereas this 79122 Shredder is sporting a more familiar black costume. I know the Shredder wore maroon in the comics sometimes, but this is definitely the better-looking version, in my opinion.

LEGO Robo Foot Ninja Minifigure LEGO TMNT 2014

The most interesting figure in this set–and the only complete exclusive–is the LEGO Robot Foot Ninja minifigure. The Robo Foot Ninja LEGO minifigure utilizes the four-armed body that was created for the LEGO Ninjago Lord Garmadon minifigure, and works very well. Really, it’s a shame that this is the only place that the LEGO Robo Foot Ninja is getting released–I’d love to army-build this figure!

With the retail price set at $49.99 for 478 pieces, 79122 LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Lair Rescue is a decent value at a hair of ten cents per piece. When you take the five minifigures into account, the set really does feel very reasonably-priced.

LEGO 79122 TMNT Shredder's Lair Rescue Set 2014The LEGO TMNT Shredder’s Lair Rescue 79122 set is scheduled to be released this spring as an exclusive to the LEGO Stores and Toys R Us. Some of the first sightings of this set have already begun to pop up from both the United States and Europe, so keep your eyes peeled if you’re dying for some new LEGO Ninja Turtles!

What are your impressions of the 2014 LEGO Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Lair Rescue set, TMNT fans? Does LEGO’s interpretation of the Shredder’s Lair satisfy you, or were you hoping for something different? Will you be adding this set to your collection this year?

  1. I think it looks cool and everything, but I was hoping for another mutant villain to be included… I realize that it wouldn’t make a lot of sense with the continuity but I was hoping for a Snakeweed or a Rat King or something…

I mean, as this set goes, it’s pretty cool, but I’d take a set with more original characters over another Shredder, Mikey, Raph, generic Foot Soldier combo set… Although, the robo foot soldier looks pretty nice… this may be the first set that I pass on.

    (But, I probably won’t)
