LEGO SDCC 2013 Green Arrow & Azog Minifigure Price MADNESS!

Move over Mr. Gold! There’s a new king of the LEGO Minifigures mountain, and it’s a real shocker! Given away for free to some lucky attendees at San Diego Comic Con 2013 last week was an ultra-limited LEGO The Hobbit Azog Minifigure. The minifigure was given away randomly, and couldn’t even be won by raffle like the LEGO Super Heroes could. The result? The most expensive LEGO Minifigure yet–the LEGO Azog Minifigure is now selling for $1500+ on ebay! But while Agog may be the new king, LEGO Green Arrow and friends can’t exactly be considered “cheap” either…

2013 SDCC LEGO Azog Minifigure Exclusive

Last LEGO released a cubic truckload of exclusives for the 2013 San Diego Comic Con. And as usual, mass riots and mobs of collectors flooded the LEGO booth, leading to all sorts of wacky problems and the raffle tickets having to be given out at a new location away from the main hall. With all that fuss, you would think that the LEGO Superheroes figures would be the biggest money items on the aftermarket–but that turns out to be not the case!

Instead, the first-ever LEGO Azog the White Orc Minifigure has been consistently selling for around $1000 since being given away at the event, and now one is even set to sell for over $1500 on ebay! This is sheer and utter insanity. I thought the first selling prices for the LEGO Mr. Gold minifigure were nuts, but this takes things to a whole other level.

Given that LEGO has molded new pieces for this release and that Azog is essentially the main antagonist of the first of the Hobbit trilogy movies, I can foresee no way that we won’t get this figure down the line with a regular set from the LEGO The Hobbit theme. In fact, I daresay that LEGO will release a better Azog minifigure later on, as the con exclusive Azog minifigure given away isn’t even the proper white color that Azog should be!

LEGO DC Super Heroes Green Arrow Minifigure SDCC 2013 ExclusiveMeanwhile, if you were hoping able to snag the first (and only) LEGO Green Arrow minifigure that will ever be released, be prepared to cry yourself to sleep for eternity. The SDCC 2013 LEGO Green Arrow minifigure is now selling for $600-$700 on ebay. No, really. With an edition size of just 200, it looks like LEGO Green Arrow is set to take his place as one of the most valuable and sought-after minifigures in LEGO history.

LEGO Black Costume Superman Minifigure Exclusive SDCC 2013Things aren’t much better for the other 2013 SDCC LEGO Superheroes Exclusives, either. The LEGO Black Costume Superman is selling for a ridiculous $500+, largely due to the fact that only 200 of the Black Superman minifigure were also made. $500+ for a minor variant of Superman in a costume he wears for only a few seconds in the Man of Steel movie. Yikes.

Things are, uh… slightly better on the LEGO Marvel Superheroes side of the spectrum, since both of the Marvel exclusives had a whopping 350 pieces produced (almost double the ludicrously low number of Green Arrow and Black Costume Superman). The result? The SDCC LEGO Spider-Woman and Spider-Man figures are selling for more “modest” (HA!) prices of $400+. Each.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Spider Woman Minifigure SDCC 2013I hate to say bad things about LEGO–because I (obviously) love LEGO very dearly–but this is total lunacy. These incredibly limited San Diego Comic Con LEGO exclusives that people want to rush and fight over and then scalp on ebay for hundreds (or thousands!) of dollars are just out of control. I feel like these sorts of stunts drain all of the fun away from LEGO and make collecting a much less enjoyable hobby.

2013 Comic Con LEGO Spider-Man Minifigure Exclusive SDCCPersonally, I don’t have the desire–or the finances–to spend untold dollars just to have a little 2″ Green Arrow LEGO Minifigure in my collection, regardless of how much I may love both Oliver Queen Green Arrow and LEGO minifigures.

How do you feel about this, fellow LEGO collectors? Do you think that these super-limited event exclusive minifigures are a blight upon LEGO, or do you hope that they continue to occur at SDCC and other events in the future? Leave a reply and vote in the poll below and let us know what you think about LEGO’s current convention exclusive practices!

LEGO SDCC 2013 Green Arrow & Azog Minifigure Price MADNESS! — 16 Comments

  1. This has just gotten way out of hand Lego. Stop releasing one-off exclusives of popular characters from major franchises. Variants of characters like Spider-Man and Superman are fine. But Green Arrow, Green Lantern( we haven’t seen him yet in a mass release set despite his figure being given away back when Lego first announced the DC superheroes line and he’s a much more popular character than Aquaman), and Azog? For shame Lego.

    • I completely agree. Variants are fine for the huge events, but make a different one for the general population. I would like to have some of the superhero ones, but I personally am not going to pay that much for a Lego figure.

  2. I hope they’ll stop it ! When you want to complete your collection, you’re just mad knowing that you will never be able to do it because of the prices of the second market (1600$ for Azog !!! They said me by mail “We are not responsible for the second market”, I said, yes you are, “Just stop this exclusive minifigures system”)

  3. Yes stop exclusives and give them to general population in the sets. Not all can go to these conventions. Let us get the chance to buy them and stop the lunacy.

  4. I agree with your sentiments. Hard to find and exclusive figures suck the fun out of collecting for me.

Not sure if we will never ever not get another Green Arrow figure – I think they will work through the DC heroes.

  5. I don’t believe Azog will only be released like this… A main protagonist from a trilogy of films you have a huge investment and licensing rights for and you make him a one off figure in a blister at a convention? I don’t buy it… I think he’ll be in at least one set (maybe a slight variation at a chance) before the end of their Hobbit Cycle in a couple of years.

  6. I disaggree with all of you , I got the 2013 sdcc superheroes set of 4 for $1650 , these figures are just stunning & worth every cent . The exclusiveness just makes them special .

    • you paid $1650 for 50¢ worth of plastic… what the hell is wrong with you.

i agree with everyone else, the exclusivity of these figures is ridiculous and the stories get worse each year from attendees. if you’re that hard up, just go on ebay and get a $10 bobo version from Hong Kong.

      • So what he paid a certain price. What an obnoxious thing for you to say. What the “hell” is wrong with you?

  7. Big Companies have taken the fun out of collecting! They need to stop all these exclusive and this is coming from a true collector. ALl major companies suck and I am going into a phase where I am no longer buying any material items because all companies have lessen there quality but still charging higher prices due to inflation costs. The public wants these figures and to make them exclusive just makes all the public customers the majority very angry and eventually will stop supporting your company. The future of business’s suck and all they care about is there profits and if they understood they control the secondary market. All they are doing is catering to the secondary market while the true fans suffer. I went from buying and supporting many companies like Nike, Lego, etc and all these companies give less quality as well compared to the past. Its only getting worse. I have a pair of Mint Original Jordans and if you held the new Gamma Jordans compared to the originals, you would laugh how bad the quality has got. Creating a rare lego figure is stupid because all this creates at these events are %98 scalpers and %2 collectors getting these and like everyone else said, takes the fun out of an item that should be purchased for cheap. Anyone to pay hundred or thousands has something wrong with them and is giving into the companies that don’t care abut the true lego supporters. If you are that wealthy paying hundreds to thousands for a .50 figure is really sad and maybe you should use your money more wisely like donating to third world countries that need food and water. I like special & rare items as well, but they need to be worth the value and for a lego figure it is really a bad decision on legos part to release an exclusive figure when many lego fans will buy a set with these characters. Lego will make more fans angry then happy by doing these releases and I no longer support companies that keep releasing limited edition items. Only scalpers care about limited editions because companies killed what collecting really means. If a limited edition comes out, there should be enough time for the public to buy it and then after a certain time the production stops still making the piece rare, but a chance for the public to buy as well. Who is working in these companies creative departments because they all should be fired thinking this was a good idea to release exclusives when more fans want these figures making the true lego fans angry. Until companies realize its the public they should cater to and not people that will only scalp it. Companies need to increase Quality control issues since everything is made in China and is coming worse and worse with the products we are receiving are no where worth the money we are paying, When lego creates exclusives, who are they really making happy? A select 200 people when there are fans world wide that want to buy theses figures. There are much more people that want a fair production of popular figures and like others said, maybe release a variant, but how can you release an exclusive spiderman figure, one that is much better then the public released one? It doesn’t make sense and the public should have the chance to purchase these figures at a later date.

    • As an avid collecter, now 50 years of age, collecting since i was a boy, it disgust’s me to see these companies doing this, i have two sons who like me are into lego and comics, we all like to have our favorite characters, mine is man of steel my 15yr old is flash and green arrow, my youngest is batman, and nightwing, they have liked these long before lego started the superhero series, we all like avengers and justice league from way back, we have managed to source some of the characters from justice league, aquaman, wonder woman, superman, new and old, batman new and old, flash has just been released, as has martian manhunter, but will never complete the set as it has already been pointed out green lantern was a comic con give away, stateside only, avengers we have thor, iron man, cap america, and hulk(the small one), hawkeye, we have been in touch with lego regarding the lack of figures released from both dc and marvel, they say it’s to do with copyrights, yet the characters are in the game, we all need to get onto dc, marvel, and lego, they need to get together and deal with this, the most i have paid for a minifigure is £45, from collectomania, and that hurt, a lot, lego also implied that my children should not be swayed by advertising, no lego should say no to special variant’s when the likes of marvel or dc ask for such things, i will be getting in touch with both marvel and dc to voice my disgust at what they are doing. pointing out that some of us have followed these characters since we were children, and if not for us would they be were they are now the same for lego, if we did not enjoy lego were would they be, there is a facebook page about this very issue, have left a comment on there as well, don’t know if this will get to there attention, some one should start a petition an lobby these about this. i would’nt know where to start, but if anyone did let me know you can my namet o that list, rant over (for now), guy

      • I understand your frustration. I collect action figures and would like to be considered a complete-ist, meaning if there is a con exclusives or store exclusive available I would hope to acquire that figure for retail. This rarely ever happens with Comic.con exclusives I just can’t get there every year. But you have to ask yourself is it really worth spending $1,000 dollars on a mini figure that for the most part may be offered in an actual set? So I have holes in my collection, and try to manage what I can control, that being regular store exclusives and the actual line of figures and if by luck I score show exclusives well then it’s just a bonus. If not I can live with out them.

      • Yeah I know I was there that year and knew nothing about MIni figure give aways. I thought they were for sale and even asked the girl at the counter about a Shazam figure and she didn’t know what I was talking about so I left. This year we did our homework, I came home 3 for 4 the only one I didn’t score was the Uni Kitty. I didn’t really want that one anyway but would have been nice to have the whole set. Thanks for all your help schooling the newbie.
