Exclusive SDCC 2015 LEGO DC Action Comics #1 Set!

Having been strongly underwhelmed by the first two San Diego Comic-Con 2015 LEGO sets being sold at the show–Throne of Ultron and Dagobah–I wasn’t expecting much from the third set revealed. But as it turns out, the third set really is the charm! While it may be overpriced, the SDCC 2015 exclusive LEGO DC Action Comics #1 Superman set recreating Superman’s first appearance is definitely a fun and inspired choice for a comic book convention exclusive!

SDCC 2015 LEGO Action Comics 1 Set with Superman Minifigure

Though he may be the most famous and iconic superhero in the world today, Superman didn’t originate in a comic with the name “Superman” in the title. No, Supes’ first appearance actually occurred in the legendary Action Comics #1 in 1938, as illustrated by Joe Shuster.

And now, for the first (and likely last) time ever, Action Comics #1 is being recreated in brick form! This is definitely not a scene I had ever contemplated having as a LEGO Super Heroes set, but I am pleasantly surprised by how much I like it now that it’s being produced!

2015 San Diego Comic Con Superman LEGO Minifigure ExclusiveThe set includes one Minifigure (Superman, obviously), who is depicted lifting an awesome bright green classic car! Neither the Superman Minifigure nor the car itself have the proper deco coloration compared with the cover of the issue they’re based on, but the effort is there and this set feels like a fun and unique bundle of fun!

On the bad side, this set will contain a mere 145 pieces for $39.99 retail. That is an absolutely awful value of almost 28 cents per piece! Yowza!! When you take into account that most collectors who want this set will have to buy it for an even more inflated aftermarket price, it makes the “value” of this set even more terrible. Alas–this would have made a great $12 mass-release LEGO DC Superheroes set!

Just like the other San Diego Comic-Con 2015 LEGO exclusives, though, you can’t just waltz up and buy this set: you have to win the right to buy it! SDCC attendees can draw a ticket at the Pavilion Terrace (outside the Sails Pavilion), and if they pull a winning ticket, then they can go to the LEGO Booth #2829 in Hall D and purchase this set for $40. Sounds like fun, right…?

LEGO SDCC 2015 Superman Action Comics Issue 1 Exclusive SetWhat do you think of the LEGO DC SDCC 2015 exclusive set, super-fans? Does this set appeal to you more than the misfires that were the Marvel and Star Wars sets, or are you quite content skipping this convention exclusive as well?

  1. Ugh, this would have been completely amazing as a $12 mass-release, or even a $20 exclusive! As it stands, though, for forty bucks I bet I could get off-the-shelf elements to approximately recreate it…

  2. The $40 dollar price tag wouldn’t dissuade me, it’s the join a raffle for the opportunity to but the exclusive. I’ve seen this pop up from time to time and I think it’s worse than scalpers. I remember going to Comic Con in 2005 and SOTA had drawings, but the drawings were for prototypes and mock ups. That was cool. This just seems like a “Hey lets come up with an exclusive and not actually put any effort or money into it!” It’s a shame.

  3. I wish they’d used the legs that have the blue top half and red bottom half, replacing the blue hip piece with a red one, so he could have boots. They’re using that particular leg on two minifigures so far, so why not this one too?
