SDCC 2015 Exclusive LEGO Star Wars Dagobah Set!

Ordinarily, I want every single kit that LEGO announced to be a riveting entry and the best it can be. But due to the fact that the San Diego Comic-Con LEGO exclusive sets and minifigures tend to be ridiculously priced and/or impossible to get on the aftermarket, I breathe a little sigh of relief whenever a new exclusive is announced that I don’t want. The limited-edition Sam Wilson Captain America minifigure being raffled at the show certainly doesn’t fall into that category, but the other recently-announced SDCC 2015 exclusive LEGO Dagobah set definitely does underwhelm…

SDCC 2015 Exclusive LEGO Star Wars Dagobah SetDespite the massive number of Star Wars vehicles and locales that have been rehashed and improved (usually) again and again by the LEGO Group over the past decade and a half, one environment that I’ve felt is long-overdue for a new release for quite some time now is Dagobah.

Being the home planet of Yoda and the place where Luke Skywalker takes his first major steps toward becoming a Jedi (not to mention being the home to some of the most irritatingly difficult LEGO Star Wars video game levels), Dagobah is among the most iconic and crucial locales in the whole Star Wars universe.

So when I heard that the San Diego Comic-Con 2015 Star Wars set was going to be themed around Dagobah, I got really excited. The trouble is: then I actually saw the SDCC Dagobah set.

For $39.99–if you can get the set at all at the convention (more on that later)–you’re getting 177 pieces that can be built into a mini Yoda’s Hut, a tree, and a mini X-Wing Fighter. These are all exceptionally tiny–and mostly common–pieces, so the almost 23 cents per piece price-point of this limited-edition set is alarmingly high, even at the original retail price. And honestly, the set looks more cobbled-together than it does fresh and fun to me.

But the biggest bummer of this set isn’t even the tiny, undetailed Dagobah environment itself–it’s the “figures” included with the set. Now, I’ve got nothing against itty-bitty LEGO micro-figures in general. In fact, I think that some of the ones that came in the Minecraft Micro-World sets were rather nice (for what they were). But these “X-Wing Luke Skywalker” and “Yoda” micro-“figures” are, well… ludicrously lame. They’re 3-5 1×1 tiles stacked up on each other. No printing, no nothing. And they… look… ridiculous.

For those of you attending San Diego Comic-Con 2015 who do like and want to pick up this set, it won’t exactly be as easy as strolling over to the LEGO Booth to pick one up. Instead, you’ll have to pick up a lottery ticket at the Pavillion Terrace in the convention center, and then–if your number is selected–you may purchase the set at booth #2829 in Hall D. If the number on your ticket isn’t selected–no Dagobah for you. Sorry!

What do you think of this year’s “for sale” exclusive SDCC 2015 LEGO Dagobah set, Star Wars fans? Is this set a must-have addition to your 2015 Star Wars collection, or do you find this release to be overpriced and/or unspectacular?

  1. From the looks of it this is one of those sets that you likely can get a hold of the pieces and put together yourself.

  2. I think I am as underwhelmed as you are. It’s like someone said, “Oh no!. We forgot about the kit were supposed to create for for Comic Con–quick come up with something in the next hour.”

Seriously–this looks like something my 7 year old nephew would have made.

  3. I actually love the set (excluding the “micro figures”…seriously wtf?)
Should of been a baggy at $19.99 at 5x the edition size

  4. Actually, I heard that a R2D2 minifig will be included. Still, it’s not as great as some of the past exclusive sets we seen before.
