LEGO Star Wars Planets Series Cancelled – New Minis Subset in 2014

Some sad news today for LEGO Star Wars Collectors: the LEGO Star Wars Planets series of sets that began in 2012 has been canceled and will not be continuing on into 2014. We have already seen the end of the series, as no additional LEGO Star Wars Planets sets will be released besides those that already came out earlier this year. It’s not all bad, of course–when one LEGO series ends, another begins! A new series of LEGO Star Wars vehicle in small-scale will be released as part of the winter LEGO Star Wars 2014 wave of sets…

LEGO Star Wars Millenium Falcon Midi Scale 7778

I have to hang my head in guilt for not supporting the sub-series, as I didn’t purchase many of the LEGO Star Wars Planet sets myself. In fact, I only bought one LEGO Star Wars Planets set ever–the LEGO Star Wars Kamimo with R4-P17 minifigure I reviewed in the winter. Even so, I thought that the concept behind the series was clever, and I’m a little bummed to see it end when there are still so many planets in the Star Wars universe that haven’t been immortalized yet. Alas.

On the upside, LEGO is not moving away from releasing mini LEGO Stars vehicle at all. In fact, we may be getting some even better small-scale LEGO Star Wars vehicles in 2014! News has leaked out regarding six sets in a brand new line of small LEGO Star Wars vehicles. Priced cheaply at $10-$20 each, the sets are intended to bring in new LEGO Star Wars collectors by offering iconic vehicles at a low price-point.

LEGO Star Wars Imperial Star Destroyer SetThe six LEGO Star Wars 2014 Winter Small Scale Sets are as follows:

LEGO Star Wars Clone Turbo Tank 75028
LEGO Star Wars AAT 75029
LEGO Star Wars Millennium Falcon 75030
LEGO Star Wars TIE Interceptor 75031
LEGO Star Wars X-Wing Fighter 75032
LEGO Star Wars Imperial Star Destroyer 75033

These sets will each come packed with one minifigure (though the minifigures will obviously not be able to fit inside the vehicles). Given how few unique characters are left to be paired with these vehicles, though, I doubt the minifigures will be exclusive to the sets.

LEGO Star Wars TIE Interceptor 6206 SetI think offering smaller versions of legendary LEGO Star Wars vehicles that are more impressive than polybag sets but less pricy than the intimidatingly-expensive versions of said vehicles is a great way to introduce new collectors to the line. Hopefully this new endeavor will be more well-received than the LEGO Star Wars Midi Scale and Planets concepts were.

No photos or specific pricing information is available yet for this new line of Winter 2014 LEGO Star Wars small vehicles, but I’ll post that information as it becomes available. LEGO Star Wars Planets Series Cancelled – New Minis Subset in 2014 — 4 Comments

  1. The only one I bought was the Acclamator assault ship w/ Clone Trooper and Coruscant. Bummed to see it go, but looking forward to the Star Destroyer.

  2. So is this why the 4th group of the planets are so hard to find (75009-75011)? They are not even on the lego site (well they do not show up in the search, but there are there and hidden, but priced at 15.99 each).

    • Lego has decided not to not to release series 4 in North America. It is available in Europe and Australia though.

  3. Well this stinks. I was wondering why I never saw series 4 anywhere, and I finally decided just to check o the internet. They are the three best sets yet, but I’m not paying and arm and a leg to get them from Europe.
