LEGO Changing Seasons 31038 Summer 2015 Set Preview!

The LEGO Creator theme has become the home for innovative builds that can be reconfigured into two (and sometimes more) totally different builds, so my curiosity was definitely piqued when “31038 Changing Seasons” turned up on the rumored list of Creator summer 2015 sets. And when I finally did get to see the set for the first time at the New York Toy Fair 2015, I knew LEGO had a winner on their hands. Whether you want to have a little winter house, or want to change to summer or fall, you’re covered with the LEGO Changing Seasons 31038 set!

LEGO Creator Changing Seasons 31038 Box

When I was touring the LEGO Booth at the 2015 New York Toy Fair in February, I didn’t have enough time to stop and really ponder what I was looking at while photographing the Changing Seasons house. It was only when I was home and analyzing the photos I took at the event that I really came to appreciate what a cool idea this set actually is!

While we’ve had plenty of vehicles that transform into other vehicles and animals that turn into other creatures as part of the creator theme, I can’t recall ever having one building that can be reconfigured to become another building entirely based on the seasons. What a wacky and crazy–but fun–idea!

2015 Toy Fair LEGO Creator Changing Seasons HouseI’ve heard some collectors voice disappointment in the fact that the Changing Seasons house is so small, and while I totally understand that viewpoint, I still really like this set. Yes, the house is a little basic–but it can also be transformed to fit into whatever diorama you want to put it into–we’ve never seen a LEGO house quite like this one!

Side View of 31038 LEGO Changing Seasons Summer 2015 SetThe “default” form of the Changing Seasons LEGO house is the spring/summer version, which comes with a great variety of season-specific props, including a lawnmower, apple tree, brick-built bird, convertible car and barbecue grill. While the house itself looks very basic in this form, the accessories really complement it well and bring the set to life!

Changing Seasons LEGO House PoolThere’s even a little swimming pool with diving board and water basketball game along the side of the house! I wish that I lived in a house this decked out!

31038 LEGO Changing Seasons Fall HouseThe “fall” version of the Changing Seasons house is definitely the weakest iteration, in my opinion. The pile of leaves, leaf-less tree and leaves on the roof of the house are all cute, but this particular build just doesn’t feel all that autumn-like to me.

LEGO Winter Changing Seasons House Summer 2015 31038Meanwhile, I love the Changing Seasons winter house! This build feels like a totally different set from the autumn and summer iterations of the home! This is the build that will be getting displayed with my winter village sets, and I love it!

This configuration of LEGO 31038 has tons of great touches including a great-looking snow blower (!!), a snowman, a cute decorated Christmas tree, wreaths and more. I can’t help but feel that more people would have been impressed with this set if LEGO had selected the winter/Christmas house to display at events and on the box instead of the default summer version.

LEGO 31038 Changing Seasons Set Price Release Date August 2015

Considering the very cool transformation features of this set, you might think that this set might end up being higher-priced and not a terrific value. Instead, Changing Seasons contains 536 pieces and retails for just $49.99, making it another solid-valued Creator set with a price-per-piece of under 10 cents per piece. Awesome!

As non-exclusive LEGO Creator sets tend to be very well-stocked and easy-to-obtain in stores, I think that fans won’t have too many problems tracking down this set once it starts hitting stores over the summer.

31038 Changing Seasons LEGO Creator SetThe LEGO Creator Changing Seasons 31038 set is one of the three new Summer 2015 Creator sets, and is scheduled to be released in August 2015. Creators sets almost always hit very early, however, so I wouldn’t be the slightest bit surprised if we saw this set hit Toys R Us stores early in July. I’ll post an update here and to the Bricks and Bloks Facebook Page once this set (and the rest of the summer 2015 sets) begin hitting stores.

What do you think of the Creator Changing Seasons set? Is this a fun gimmick that wins your heart with its ingenuity, or a set which is too basic and ultimately disappoints you?

  1. This really is a great idea. A set that can be re-configured to fit the seasons, and small enough to be able to be displayed in many places–atop a fireplace mantle, a bookshelf, a dresser, etc. Many people change their household decorations to fit the season, so this fits right in with their decorating pattern — and they don’t have to keep searching for it whenever they decide to make the change. They also can give it to the kids as their responsibility for the decorating change!! Work that is actually “play”–what more could a kid (or AFOL) ask for!!

It would be great if this was a “first” in a series of similar type seasonal scenes.

  2. The build on the box art is different than the build being displayed for the spring/summer seasonal build… Are there TWO builds for that season???? The house, that is.
