LEGO Doctor Who Set Announced! LEGO Ideas #012!

Earlier today I discussed the sole set from the second batch of LEGO Ideas 2014 submissions that has been approved for production as an official LEGO Ideas set in 2015: the LEGO Ideas #011 WALL-E set! But while that was the one and only fan-created set approved from the second batch of 2014 submissions, the LEGO Ideas review board wasn’t quite done with the submissions from the first batch. After a very long review and much consideration, it has been announced that the LEGO Ideas #012 set later this year will be none other than the LEGO Doctor Who and Companions set!

LEGO Doctor Who and Companions Set

Confession time: my friends and relatives have been trying to get me into watching Doctor Who for years. Years. But the good doctor has just never managed to catch my interest enough to get me to watch. Thus, literally all I know about Dr. Who can be summed up in “phone booths”, “scarfs” and “multiple doctors”.

That said, I know an insane number of LEGO collectors are going to be thrilled out of their mind about the Doctor Who LEGO set, so let me summarize what we know about it.

Gaming company artist Andy Clark submitted the “Doctor Who and Companions” set to the LEGO Review Board as part of the second of three batches of sets for LEGO Ideas consideration in 2015. Andy’s submission was based upon the setting of the London Street, Totters Lane, and would include a Tardis, a Dalek, one (or two!) of the various Doctor Whos from over the years, and two companions for Doctor Who (which would differ depending upon which Doctor Who(s) were chosen for the figures).

Doctor Who LEGO Minifigures Concept ArtAndy Clark’s prototype for this set was built using around 530 pieces, and also included optional minifigures of a Cyberman or Weeping Angel, as well as the “action feature” of the Tardis opening up and having a full console inside for Doctor Who to utilize in his time-traveling adventures.

While there’s no guarantee of how closely the LEGO Ideas Doctor Who and Companions set will adapt the original prototype concept for this set, LEGO specifically chose this submission over another Doctor Who submission, so the final product should be at least reasonably close to what we see in Andy’s prototype.

LEGO Doctor Who Minifigure with Tardis and DalekI’ll post an update when LEGO reveals images and specific details for their version of the LEGO Ideas #12 Doctor Who and Companions set, and you can ‘Like’ Bricks and Bloks on Facebook if you want news and photos transported right to your Facebook Newsfeed! Based off of past trends, I’d guesstimate that we’ll start to hear more news about this impending set come summer 2015 (and likely not any sooner).

Hands up, Whovians! How do you feel about LEGO bringing Doctor Who (and friends!) to minifigure form? Are you hoping that they stick very closely to the original design for this set, or would you prefer if LEGO took some liberties and changed things up for what is likely to be the only LEGO Doctor Who set ever made?

  1. Those minifigs look awful. Lego sticks it to Character Building twice in one year! They’ll probably close up shop for good after losing their best two properties.

      • I mean, it’s explicitly stated in the article that those are images of the artist’s prototype sample and it’s unknown how much LEGO will keep to that design, so I don’t know why he’s judging the figures so harshly.

  2. I was so surprised and excited when I heard the announcement. I hope there will be more to come for Dr. Who if this set sells well. I also hope that they provide ample playability by including lots of bad guys for the doctor and his companion. I’d hope that we get all 12 doctors, but if I had to choose one, I’d rather have Tennant or Smith over Capaldi,
