2016 LEGO Angry Birds Sets Revealed! Castle! Pirate Ship!

During this past week, TLG uploaded the entire North America Winter 2016 LEGO Catalog, giving us our first official looks at dozens and dozens of sets that had previously only been heard about from leaks and rumors. But there was one incoming theme that had been officially confirmed that was notable by its absence from the American catalog… but not the Russian catalog! This is definitely not going to be a theme for everyone, but the 2016 LEGO Angry Birds sets have now been revealed!

Oh man, if there’s one theme that may be able to top the utter ignorance that I had when I first trying to discuss the LEGO Speed Champions sets, it’s these LEGO The Angry Birds Movie sets. Angry Birds may have been a worldwide phenomenon that sold a bajillion games worldwide, but I played exactly two minutes of the game before I felt annoyed and bored with it.

Even so, if there’s one thing that can capture my interest enough to make me take another look at a property, it’s building said license in brick form! And in mid-2016, that’s just what TLG is going to do with a half-dozen sets in honor of the Angry Birds movie!

I’m very surprised to see TLG taking this license on after the utter flop that was the K’NEX Angry Birds line during the heyday of Angry Birds games a few years back, but let’s take a look… LEGO Angry Birds Movie Sets Pig CastleThe biggest of these Angry Birds LEGO sets is the Pigs’ castle. At a glance the Pig Castle looked almost like an everyday medieval castle–right up until I noticed the pig snout above the entrance way and the crazy twist slide near the top. This is (obviously) not a castle for non-Angry Birds fans, but I imagine fans of these games will love the detail on this set.

This set comes with “minifigures” (and I use that term loosely) of Red, Chef Pig, Foreman Pig, King Pig and Mighty Eagle. All three pigs and the eagle are exclusives for this set, which is likely good bait for fans of the series who like these characters (whoever they are). The set also includes a little catapult for launching Red, which I recognize from my two minutes of Angry Birds gameplay.

The second set includes a Pilot Pig flying an airplane (there’s something I never thought I’d say) and another Red minifigure. In fact, Red comes with five out of the six Angry Birds sets. I suppose he must be the main character of the movie, so I guess that makes sense, but it seems a bit like overkill. This seems fine for a small, cheap set.

LEGO 2016 Angry Birds Sets Pig Pirate Ship BikerThe other four Angry Birds sets are shown on the second page of the catalog. These include a weird Pigs’ Pirate Ship base with a raising and lowering wrecking ball (?), which includes minifigures of Red, Bomb, Leonard and Pirate Pig. The Black Angry Bird minifigure, Bomb, is exclusive to this set, which I think will help with sales of what is otherwise one of the oddest-looking LEGO Pirate-themed sets ever.

It’s probably worth noting that the Leonard minifigure in the Angry Birds Pirate Ship set is just the King Piggy figure from the Castle set without the cape and crown. Hmmm…

There’s also a weird Piggy Town set which exclusively includes the Pink Angry Bird Stella minifigure, as well as another Red and generic Piggy 1 and generic Piggy 2. This looks… bizarre… but does seem to be in the same style as the mobile games. Not for me, but looks like it should be another playset with a lot of play features value for the kiddos.

LEGO Angry Birds Pig VehiclesThere’s also a white Angry Bird Matilda minifigure in the Biker Pig set, which includes a small Angry Bird house, a Biker Pig motorcycle and yet another Red minifigure. The little Angry Birds hut in this set is actually rather charming, and if I were to purchase any of these sets, it would likely be this one.

The last Angry Birds set includes Chuck the Yellow Angry Bird minifigure and a generic Piggy who’s driving some sort of Pig Car. This should be a $12.99 or lower set, which ought to make fans who just want the yellow Angry Birds character happy.

What do you think of these LEGO The Angry Birds movie sets? Are you still interested in this property and getting hyped up for the movie, or do you feel like these brick-built Angry Birds sets are simply coming too little, too late?
