Hobbit 3 Blu-Ray with Exclusive Bain Minifigure Released!

I outright detested the third Hobbit movie. I’ll be a Peter Jackson fan for life for his work on the Lord of the Rings trilogy (and to some extent his first two Hobbit films), but The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies was a huge disappointment and a real dud in my opinion. So you would probably expect that I would be nowhere near a store at 9AM on the morning the Hobbit: Battle of Five Armies DVD/Blu-Ray set is released. But you would be wrong. Because as much as I hate that movie, I love exclusive minifigures more: the Target Exclusive Hobbit 3 Blu-Ray with Bard and exclusive Bain minifigures has now been released!

The Hobbit The Battle of Five Armies Blu Ray with Exclusive LEGO Bain Minifigure

Though we’ve been treated to a fairly extensive LEGO Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit theme these last few years, it appears that the age of LEGO Tolkien toys is at an end. With today’s release of The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies on DVD and Blu-Ray at Target stores, the final known The Hobbit minifigure has been released: an all-new variant of Bain, Son of Bard.

For a legendary series like The Hobbit/The Lord of the Rings to go out with a whimper rather than a bang is pretty sad, but it is what it is, and it appears that the LEGO Lord of the Rings is at an end.

Exclusive LEGO Bain and Bard Minifigures with Target Hobbit Blu Ray PackAnd thus, even though I totally hated The Battle of Five Armies movie (which I unfortunately saw on New Year’s Eve and finished off 2014 with), I found myself at my local Target store bright and early this morning to pick up the Target exclusive Blu Ray and obtain my theme-ending Bain minifigure.

It’s not the most spectacular or interesting figure ever–by far–but it is the last one in the theme (and Bain is pretty integral in the defeat of Smaug), so that makes it special enough to earn my dollars.

The Hobbit Battle of Five Armies Target Exclusive DVD Blu Ray SetIn addition to the exclusive LEGO Bain minifigure, the set also includes a Bard minifigure that we’ve seen twice before–once as a San Diego Comic Con 2014 exclusive, and once in the expensive 79017 Battle of Fives Armies set. I’ve already got this minifigure, but I know some folks don’t–and didn’t want to pay a fortune for either of the prior releases of it–so this Bard minifig re-release may be for them.

I know that there are many Lord of the Rings fans still hoping for a LEGO Minas Tirith set (and efforts through LEGO Ideas to get that made), but I just don’t see that happening at this time. For all intents and purposes, these are the last The Hobbit minifigures I expect to see released.

Target Exclusive Hobbit 3 Blu Ray LEGO Combo Set ReleasedThe regular price for this limited-edition Target Hobbit Battle of Five Armies Combo Pack is $29.99, but it’s on sale this week for $25.99. Typically Target only stocks one shipment of their LEGO exclusive combo packs, so it’s unlikely that we’ll see a lower price than $25.99 for this set.

Are you planning to pick up the final figure in the LEGO Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit theme this week, Tolkien fans? Or do you feel that your collection can be complete without this specific version of Bain? And if you’re dissatisfied with the selection of Bain as the final minifig from The Hobbit, who would you have chosen to give the honor to of being the last new figure released for The Hobbit movies?

  1. I’m surprised at your hatred of the last Hobbit movie, Battle of the 5 Armies…I though it was
a bit slow, especially the parts having to do with the insanity of the Dwarf King Thorin Oakenshield…but the last battle in the movie was EPIC. Tell me why you hated it so much, I am curious, and I will tell you that I think they should have included, in at least one of the sets, the brother of Azog, and I AM embarassed that I can’t remember his name…I think it was Agog or something…
Any-who that character was one of the only dark warriors that almost defeated Legolas Greenleaf , who is undefeatable in many senses of the word.

Anyhow…thanks for the heads up, as always!

    ~Amy

    • Oh geez, I hate that movie so, so much! It’s hard to put into words! =D

I think we’ll have to agree to disagree, but off the top of my head, some of the things I really hate about The Battle of Five Armies are:

    • –The whole bit with Gandalf, Galadriel and Elrond laying the smackdown on the Ringwraiths in Dol Guldur was just totally ludicrous–not to mention incomprehensible. It’s hard to take the Ringwraiths seriously in Lord of the Rings after Elrond shows up and takes them to town effortlessly in this movie. And as for the showdown between Galadriel and Sauron, well–I’ve read the Silmarillion and I still have no idea what happened in this confrontation.
    • –Tauriel was established in the previous movie as being strong and capable, but in this movie she ends up looking weak and incapable in battle. I hate that Tauriel gets beat down by Bolg and then the man (Legolas) has to show up and save her. Tauriel had the potential to be the one female character in this series that didn’t need to be saved by a man, so I was super-bummed to see that she just couldn’t get the job done on her own.
    • –Thorin Oakenshield’s sudden descent into madness was mind-bogglingly bad and sudden. I couldn’t believe what a jerk Thorin was out of the blue.
    • –The hundreds (if not thousands) of orcs are dominating the battle of the five armies, right up until… 13 dwarfs charge the battlefield? Really…? This was just bizarre and sad. I love our dwarfs, but they barely escaped their earlier encounters with the orcs alive. Now they can single-handedly turn the tides in a battle with thousands of orcs? No. Way.
    • –I really liked the actors for Bain and Bard, but the way that they took care of Smaug was both abrupt and silly. So, so, sad. I was actually rooting for Smaug. =D
    • –The character of Alfred from Lake Town got copious amounts of screen time and dialogue in this movie, which ultimately amounted to… nothing? The character just… goes away? After doing nothing? I was completely disappointed to see Alfred end up being a superfluous, meaningless character.
    • –I know Peter Jackson was in a tough spot with Fili and Kili, but I hated the way that they were unceremoniously dealt with. What happened with Boromir in Fellowship was far more beautiful and memorable, and he was a character that we didn’t like nearly as much and didn’t get close to as much screen time as Fili and Kili.
    • –After all the time we spent with the various dwarfs in the first two movies, most of them ended up being totally inconsequential and irrelevant in this movie. If they were going to ultimately get zero character development or plot advancement in the last film, I don’t see what the point was in including them at all.
    • Maybe on a rewatch (as I now own this movie I hate, LOL) I’ll grow to like this movie a little more, but on the surface it’s far more flawed than any of the previous Peter Jackson Tolkien movies.

  2. I can see why the ‘3rd’ hobbit movie was a let down seeing it originally was planned as just a two part movie. I think they should have ended hobbit 2 with the defeat of Smaug and built up the tension of the pending battle of the five armies. Overall I still enjoyed it. As for the target exclusive I would have given a special Bilbo and Frodo figure. (to bind the two movies sets together)

  3. Amy, I think you are talking about Azog’s son Bolg. I agree that TLG needs to make him. The Hobbit video game isn’t the entire series so will they finish out with another game and exclusive figure? That is my hope.

  4. The difference between my knowledge of the 2 different series may have sparked my curiosity for your hatred of this movie.  I liked it (not loved it) enough, but I will agree that there is NO comparison between any of the Hobbit movies and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and part of my prejudice is my lack of knowledge of the latter.  I read all of the LOTR books multiple times but never read the Hobbit; my only comparison to the Peter Jackson Hobbit was the animated movie series released in the late 80’s that I watched as a child (do you remember that?…great animation art for it’s time..similar to Don Bluth’s animation but raw and darker), and boy!, was I confused at that age by this story!  So I have no background or comparison as I did with the LOTR, consequently I was much more critical of the LOTR Trilogy, albeit still in awe of the genius that did finally put the books to good measure onscreen (Peter Jackson!)

Also, while trying to actually watch the Hobbit Trilogy, my adorably clueless  7 year old son asked me innumerable questions whilst watching (trying to watch) the movie(s), so I was a bit relieved at some of the simplicity of the plots.  ~ 7 year old with ADHD + mom + long confusing movie= both parties missing most of the details and some of the plot.~
So I may have liked the ending because it was ending, if you know what I mean…:)

The last battle was, in retrospect, unrealistic and magical…but the choreography was very cool and I think that is what I liked the most.

As for Tauriel, I am in TOTAL agreement!!!! I was very disappointed in her death, considering that she seemed invincible throughout the entire story!  But that was Tolkiens age, most women couldn’t even wield a sword in his time, never-mind win a battle!

I also DETESTED that Alfred character, I almost didn’t buy the Lake Town Lego sets because I hated him so much.  I too agree he was given way too much screen time now that you mentioned it.  We all have to deal with too many people in reality like Alfred; I wish his character was not immortalized in this movie to the degree that he was….

I guess its time to read the books for me…I am sure I will see more clearly the mistakes made in thisTrilogy, and I will have better perspective to be critical at all…because at this point I have no right to criticize, I missed too much of the movies watching it with my son….that said I probably will watch it alone one of these days to get a clearer perspective as well.

And, lastly, my comments on Lego’s (which is what this conversation is really supposed to be about), is that I would have loved it if Lego had made a Bolg figure, Taureil’s killer, but a formidable foe, (thanks Matt for giving me the name) instead of Bard.  I was actually searching through all of the sets thinking I had just overlooked this particular minifigure, but sadly, Lego did disappoint me by not including a Bolg figure…he was a key character and I am shocked that they never made him.

Thanks for the comments!  This was a nice distraction for my mundane day…off to the grocery store now…and I’m running late!

  5. So I just picked up the hobbit movie from target in the cashier let me know that there is an additional 10% off until the 28th using the cartwheel app.so with the red card also I saved $7.49. Even though I agree with the movie not being great, it’s almost cheaper to buy it now then buy the minifig later.
