LEGO Nexo Knights The King’s Mech 2016 Set Preview!

The mega-dump of Winter 2015 LEGO sets photos that we’ve been waiting for for the past month-and-a-half has finally rolled out, and with it has come our first hi-res images of the entire first wave of 2016’s newest major theme, LEGO Nexo Knights! I am more than a little bit skeptical of this medieval/sci-fi mash-up of a theme, but some of the sets are just so crazy, they’re downright amazing! And one of those sets is the Nexo Knight’s The King’s Mech 70327, which is exactly what it sounds like…

70327 LEGO Nexo Knights The King's Mech Box

It feels like it’s been an eternity since TLG officially announced the Nexo Knights theme at New York Comic-Con 2015 last month, but finally they’re ready to completely pull back the curtain and show us everything coming our way for the theme this winter!

Make no mistake, this is no small, quiet launch–Nexo Knights will be arriving in style in a month and a half, with well over a dozen sets available on day one! I don’t love all of them (or maybe not even most of them), but there’s no denying that they’re definite conversation pieces!

The King's Mech 70327 LEGO Nexo Knights Winter 2016 SetOne of the sets announced today that most caught my eye was unquestionably the 70327 LEGO The King’s Mech set, which is–I kid you not–a giant robot driven by a medieval king. Even better, the mech is wielding an enormous Excalibur-like sword that’s almost as big as it is, and its left arm is a shield piloted by a robot underling. (No, really.)

The King’s Mech has integrated ball-joints, so theoretically it should have a lot of playability and posing potential.

LEGO Nexo Knights The King's Mech MinifiguresThe King’s Mech 70327 includes three minifigures: King Halbert, a Flame Thrower archer and a King’s Bot. I actually sort of dig all three of these figures, just because they’re so silly and ridiculous.

LEGO King Halbert Minifigure Nexo Knights 2016King Halbert looks exactly as you’d expect King Arthur to look if he’d been born into a technologically advanced, sci-fi camelot. His techno armor and sword are way fun.

LEGO Nexo Knights Flame Thrower MinifigureMy favorite minifigure from this set, however, is definitely the Flame Thrower minifigure. With his black mohawk and black leather-like pants, this red-skinned lava monster looks downright demonic! I think this is one of the more “evil”-looking minifigs that we’ve ever seen!

Nexo Knights Flame Thrower Minifigure with CrossbowThe Flame Thrower figure comes equipped with a huge mega crossbow that he can try to combat the King’s Mech with. But let’s be serious here–I don’t like this dude’s chances trying to flick little fiery discs at a giant, sword-wielding robot mech.

LEGO King's Bot Minifigure in King's Mech Shield

Meanwhile, the King’s Bot minifigure resides in the arm of the King’s Mech–which can apparently shoot off from the rest of the robot and operate as a separate, stud-firing jet! (Say what?) This has a real “Voltron” vibe to it. I like it!!

At this time, we don’t know what the official pricing on the LEGO 70327 King’s Mech set is going to be, but we do know the piece-count, so I think I can make a reasonably accurate guess. With this set consisting of 375 pieces and some larger pieces for joints, I’d expect this set to retail for about $39.99. I like all three minifigures and the mech itself more than I expected to, so this is a set I’m definitely considering buying at that price-point, even if it does end up being slightly over my ideal of ten cents per piece.

Nexo Knights King's Mech Set without Minifigures with SwordThe Nexo Knight’s King’s Mech 70327 LEGO 2016 set is scheduled to be released on January 1st, 2016 online and in stores. This particular set is likely to be a retail store exclusive and only available at the LEGO Stores and one other retail chain, so if you can’t find it easily come January 1st, you’ll know you’re at the wrong store. I’ll post an update when and if it’s confirmed if this particular set is actually an exclusive and what retailer has claimed it for their very own.

What are your thoughts on the King’s Mech Nexo Knights set, brick fans? Does a giant mech suit-driving medieval king strike your fancy, or does the concept of this make your eyes roll?

  1. Say what you want about the theme, but these sets are incredibly well designed. Using the visor from Hero Factory Brain Attack as a canopy for the minifigure is genius!!!
